1836 - Legal & General was founded as Legal & General Life Assurance Society.
1855 - The company changed its name to Legal & General Life Assurance Company.
1884 - The company was granted a royal charter.
1920 - Legal & General began to expand internationally, opening an office in Paris.
1951 - The company went public with an initial public offering (IPO).
1979 - Legal & General acquired the British subsidiary of the American insurance company, Aetna.
1991 - The company demutualized and became a public limited company (plc).
2001 - Legal & General acquired the UK business of the National Provident Institution.
2013 - The company sold its interest in the Indian joint venture, IndiaFirst Life Insurance.
2019 - Legal & General acquired the remaining 51% stake in its Indian joint venture, IndiaFirst Life Insurance.
