2. Amerant Bancorp's 3Q25 Earnings: A Mixed Bag

Amerant Bancorp reported a mixed financial performance in 3Q25, with earnings per share (EPS) coming in at $0.39, missing the estimated $0.53. Revenue growth was relatively flat, with total interest income increasing, but being offset by higher provision for credit losses. The net interest margin (NIM) was impacted by the repricing of floating-rate loans and the effect of additional rate cuts. The reported EPS translates to a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 10.7, indicating a reasonable valuation. The bank's Price-to-Tangible Book Value (P/TBV) is around the same level as the P/B ratio of 0.8, suggesting that tangible book value is close to the book value.

📋 Highlights
  • Nonperforming Assets Increase: Rose to $140 million (1.3% of total assets) from $98 million (0.9%) in Q2 2025 due to $69.9 million in downgraded commercial loans.
  • Payoff Recovery: Achieved $11.8 million loan payoff, recovering $8.7 million in prior charge-offs and generating $341,000 in Q4 interest income.
  • Total Assets: Reached $10.4 billion (up from prior figures), with investment securities at $2.3 billion (+$336.8 million) and gross loans at $6.9 billion (-$247.4 million).
  • Expense Reduction Target: Aims for $2 million to $3 million quarterly savings in 2026 via contract reviews, in-house task shifts, and cost eliminations.
  • Loan Growth Outlook: Expects $125 million–$175 million net loan growth in Q4 2025, offset by criticized asset reductions and payoffs.

Asset Quality Concerns

Asset quality was a significant concern in 3Q25, with nonperforming assets (NPAs) increasing to $140 million, or 1.3% of total assets. This was driven by the downgrade of commercial real estate (CRE) loans and commercial loans due to updated financials and missed projections. However, the bank is taking proactive steps to address these issues, including realigning personnel, investing in third-party reviews, and launching a leadership meeting to monitor progress. As Jerry Plush noted, "we're committed to resolving these issues prudently and expeditiously."

Loan Growth and Deposit Trends

Total gross loans decreased by $247.4 million to $6.9 billion in 3Q25, while total deposits remained relatively flat at $8.3 billion. The bank expects loan growth to be selective, focusing on commercial and industrial (C&I) loans, and a more cautious approach to CRE lending. Deposit growth is expected to be in line with loan growth. The bank is also working to reduce its investment portfolio growth and is considering contraction in this area.

Expense Reduction Initiatives

The bank has launched an expense reduction initiative, aiming to achieve $2 million to $3 million in savings per quarter in 2026. This includes contract reviews, transferring tasks from third parties to in-house resources, and outright expense elimination. The bank expects to normalize its expense base to around $74 million, with additional reductions through initiatives like reviewing third-party contracts.

Outlook and Valuation

Analysts estimate revenue growth of 2.1% for next year. Given the current valuation metrics, including a P/E ratio of 10.7 and a P/B ratio of 0.8, the stock appears to be reasonably valued. The dividend yield of 1.98% provides a relatively stable return. With the bank's efforts to address asset quality concerns and reduce expenses, there is potential for improved financial performance in the future.
