1839 - The company was founded as a small bank in Parkersburg, Virginia (now West Virginia)
1905 - The bank was rechartered as a national bank and renamed The Parkersburg National Bank
1959 - The bank merged with The Harris Trust Company to form The Parkersburg National Bank of West Virginia
1982 - The bank changed its name to United Bankshares, Inc. and began trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange
1990 - United Bankshares, Inc. acquired The Bank of St. Albans in West Virginia
1992 - The company acquired The First National Bank of Maryland
1997 - United Bankshares, Inc. acquired The George Washington Savings Bank in Virginia
2004 - The company acquired The Virginia National Bankshares Corporation
2012 - United Bankshares, Inc. acquired The F&M Bank Corp. in Virginia
2014 - The company acquired The Virginia Commerce Bancorp, Inc.
